The Stock Market For Beginners - What Is Your Investment Focus?
Summary: This section is a guide to the stock market for beginners. Clearly, there is a lot of investment information to cover! We hope that this part of the site will prove to be a useful reference to stock market investment and the workings of an international stock exchange.
There can be no doubt that a modern and international stock market is a hugely complex arena. Your author has read studies that suggest that one copy of the Financial Times contains more information than an average person would have been exposed to in their entire lifetime around the 18th century! The vast majority of that information relates to stock and bond news and prices, currencies and commodities.
In such an environment, it is vital for every investor - especially beginners - to specialise on areas that they feel more confident and competent in. This focus will help to reduce the 'noise' that distracts us all.
Such a specialisation might be in the safer 'blue chip' stocks from indices like the
Dow Jones
or
FTSE 100
. Or, it may be a focus on a sector (such as oil companies for example), or smaller faster growing firms or penny shares.
Whatever this focus, it is vital if an investor is to reduce the risks taken and have at least an average possibility of producing regular investment profits.
How do you choose this focus?
Perhaps it will choose you! If for example, you have spent your entire career working for a major hotel chain, you would hopefully know something about the smooth running and operation of a hotel, bar and restaurant. This familiarity might be able to provide an advantage when in looking for investments in the travel and hotels sector.
What might such an advantage be worth to your annual performance? Perhaps a few percent each year, which may be enough to separate your portfolio from losses to profits.

He is famous for spurning one investment 'fad' after another and almost always ending up with excellent annual returns. He is no newcomer to investment, but still he behaves as if he were...
If you are a stock market beginner, be sure to think about how you might be able to use your circle of competence to focus your investment efforts, into areas in which you have an advantage (or at least a legal advantage).
International?
It is also worth mentioning at this stage that there are opportunities for investment around the world. Oddly, the
top 10 richest countries in the world
do not generally make for the best investment locations. This means that the major markets and money locations appear to be separate. If this teaches you anything, it is that there is always something to learn in investment!
